Nathan Cummings RushCare Oncology Center

1650 West Harrison St.
Rush University Medical Center
Chicago, IL

Description:

To provide a more patient-focused care environment and improve on the national 62 percent five-year cancer-survival rate that reflects superior treatment methods, Rush University Medical Center decided to upgrade its renowned 14,000 SF Nathan Cummings RushCare Oncology Center.

John H. Driscoll, Alter+Care President, who was responsible for real estate development at Rush, implemented the RushCare concept to focus on the total patient and initially applied it to its oncology unit.  RushCare redesigns physical facilities and restructures staff roles to eliminate barriers between patients and care providers and assures a home-like environment - and in the process -- increased satisfaction levels by more than 15 percent.

Nathan Cummings' 37 semi-private rooms were converted to 21 private rooms, enhancing privacy for patients and their families.  High-tech equipment monitors vital signs from patients' beds so staff knows what is happening at all times.  A full range of diagnostic equipment now is available in the oncology unit so patients no longer have to go to another area of the hospital for tests.

Nathan Cummings' central nurses' station represents a real departure.  Typically characterized by the arm-high counter that acts as a barrier, the familiar desk was replaced by three open-plan, conference-table stations, strategically placed within a few feet of patient rooms.
